Alumni Kyleigh Kappas Makes First Team All-Skyline Conference!

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2017) – USMMA senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) were both selected by the Skyline Conference head coaches to the First Team All-Skyline and junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) earned a spot on the Second Team, the league announced on Monday.

This is the second-straight season that Pope has landed on the First Team All-Skyline. The senior outside hitter is among the conference’s best in three different categories this year. She ranks second in the league with 3.22 kills per set, fourth with 0.65 service aces per set and her .211 hitting percentage is good for eighth. Pope has also compiled a team-best 237 digs this year to go along with 25 blocks. She has been named to the Skyline Weekly honor roll four separate times the season (Oct. 2, Oct. 9, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30) and she earned the 2017 Skyline Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award.

Kappas earns her second career Skyline postseason honor and her first-ever First Team selection, as she was named to the Second Team after the 2016 season. The sophomore is league’s best setter with 9.54 assists per set and she also ranks third on the Mariners with 2.36 digs per set, while also contributing 75 kills and 28 service aces throughout the season. Kappas was named the Skyline Player of the Week after the first week of the season back on Sept. 5 and was selected to the Skyline Weekly honor roll twice (Sept. 25 and Oct. 16).

Lefler’s Second Team selection is the first of the junior’s career. She ranks fifth in the Skyline Conference and second on the team with 3.05 kills per set. Her .205 hitting percentage is third-best on the Mariners and she has also contributed 192 digs, 35 service aces and 12 blocks on the season. Back on Sept. 18, Lefler was named the Skyline Player of the Week and a week earlier, Sept. 11, she landed on the Skyline Weekly honor roll.

Pope, Kappas and Lefler all helped guide the Mariners to their first Skyline Conference title and trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001. Merchant Marine will open Tourney action this Friday, Nov. 10, against Stevens Institute up at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at Clarkson’s Alumni Gymnasium.
