Alumni Sarah Mullens – Defensive Player of the Week

SARAH MULLENS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior libero/defensive specialist from Aurora, Colo., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 8th to Sunday, October 14th.

Mullens led the 10th-ranked Tiger volleyball team to a pair of SCAC victories over the weekend against Schreiner and Texas Lutheran. She highlighted her weekend with a 32-dig performance in just three games against Texas Lutheran on Saturday, which is a career-best for three sets and is also believed to be a school record for a three-set match. It is tied for the fourth-highest total in a three-set match in conference history.

For the weekend, Mullens averaged 8.80 digs/set, which is well above her season average of 4.16 digs/set as a libero and a defensive specialist. She also led the team to an average of 20.29 digs/set for the weekend. This season, Mullens leads Trinity with 333 total digs – more than 100 ahead of her nearest teammate. She also has a team-best 37 service aces.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling of Colorado College recorded 15 blocks and 12 digs to help lead the Tigers to three crossover victories last week. Her efforts helped the Tigers hold their three opponents to a combined .104 hitting percentage, and she tied her season high of seven total blocks during Saturday’s sweep of Centenary College and her five digs in the three-set win over Southwestern matched her career high. Senior defensive specialist Brandi Campos of Southwestern averaged 4.54 digs per set as the Pirates posted a 3-1 week at the B-C Crossover #2 at Colorado College. She had 24 kills in the 3-1 victory over Austin College. First-year libero Mari Prazak of Austin College continued her strong season by leading the ‘Roos to a 2-2 mark at the B-C Crossover #2. She totaled 67 digs, averaged 3.94 per set and hit double-digit digs in all four matches with a high of 21 in a five set loss to Colorado College. Junior libero Jaci Chambers of Texas Lutheran recorded double-digit digs in both matches, including 24 in the three-game sweep over Johnson & Wales (Colo.). First-year setter/right-side Rachel Demerjian of Centenary had a great weekend with two more double-doubles, leading the team with 3.82 digs per set.
