KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2016) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) was named the Skyline Conference Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Kappas helped lead the Mariners to a second-place finish at the Seventh Annual Maritime Classic with a 2-1 record over the past weekend up in Buzzards Bay, Mass. on the campus of Mass. Maritime. She was named to the All-Classic Team after she dished out 8.33 assists per set (75 total) over the three matches, including 20 in a straight-set sweep in the Skyline opener against SUNY Maritime on Saturday night and 38 in a sweep of Mass. Maritime on Sunday. The rookie currently leads the Skyline Conference with 8.61 assists per set.
Seniors Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) and Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) along with junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) are also among Skyline Conference leaders. Macbeth’s 0.68 blocks per set are good for second in the league, Pope’s 3.00 kills per set rank third, as does Lefler’s .216 hitting percentage, while Marionakis’ 3.82 digs per set rank fourth in the league.
As a team, the Mariners are best in the Skyline in holding opponents to just 0.56-percent hitting and are second in the league in kills per set (10.04), assists per set (9.13) and digs per set (15.30). USMMA is also fourth in the league with 1.04 blocks per set and 2.30 services aces per set.
